Unstoppable || A 10 point book review

  1. Name: Unstoppable: Harnessing science to change the world
  2. Author: Bill Nye
  3. Genre: Non Fiction/Climate Change
  4. Book Post No. : 55
  5. What is it about? : Unstoppable is about the solutions offered by Science to deal with Climate Change. In it, the author, Bill Nye, first gives an explanation of Climate Change, then moves onto explain the different sources of clean energy we have including solar, wind, hydro, nuclear etc. He also looks at other aspects which are connected like water, space and what the general public can do. The author, Bill Nye, who is a Mechanical Engineer, is best known as the host of the Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993-1999).
  6. How I came to read it? : It was a while since I read a book on Climate Change so I was looking for one after my last read. I stumbled upon on this book while exploring a library branch of Surrey Libraries where I have never been before.
  7. Did I like it?: This was a moderately good read for me. I picked up the book based on the reputation of Bill Nye as a popular science educator though I have never watched any of his shows. The book does a good job of explaining the basics of Climate Change and the ways we can fight it but it is definitely not for someone who is already in the same field. Sometimes it felt like any other book/article on the subject. Optimists will love this book though. Bill mostly focusses on what needs to be done and how we can do it. He rarely goes in the direction of why we are not doing what we should we be doing. The world is complex. There are so many factors at work. Bill knows this. Far better than many of us but he does not get into that. In the last chapter, he admits precisely this point. To me any book that is all rosy and optimistic about what we can do about climate change just feels wrong.
  8. Positives: Easy to read, excellent explanations of complex subjects, good overview of climate change and ways of preventing it, good for people trying to understand what the existing technology we have to deal with climate change.
  9. Negatives: Too simple for people already working in this field, does not offer anything new.
  10. Any other personal notes, observations, fun facts etc.:
