Tomie: No use escaping || A 10 point book review

  1. Name: Tomie: No use escaping
  2. Author: Junji Ito
  3. Genre: Fiction/Graphic Novel/Manga/Horror
  4. Book Post No. : 56
  5. What is it about? : ‘Tomie’ is a Japanese horror manga by Junji Ito. Tomie is a mysterious girl whose unmatched beauty drives men insane and eventually leads them to kill her. But Tomie does not die easily. She always comes back. This books has multiple chapters each telling a different story of how Tomie leads men and families to their ruin.
  6. How I came to read it? : I picked up this book after I completed ‘Uzumaki’ which I loved. This was also suggested by the same collague who suggested I read Uzumaki and We are where the nighmares go.
  7. Did I like it?: This was a bit of a let down for me. Though the artwork and illustrations are stunning as usual, the storylines get a bit repetitive. Sure, there is a lot of variation and creativity in the manner of men falling for Tomie and her eventual murder and rebirth, but the basic premise remains the same. It would have been great to see more depth to Tomie’s background. There is not much development there. But having said that the horror element in it is top class. It has many disturbing moments which are sure to make the reader squirm in the seat. If you are a fan of body horror (I am not) this would be a great read!
  8. Positives: Stunning artwork, fast read, top class horror elements, some frames have a gothic appeal.
  9. Negatives: Some may think its too repetitive with not much character development. Its the same premise again and again, only in different manner.
  10. Any other personal notes, observations, fun facts etc.:
